Traveling is not all glam! Sometimes, we have to get our hands dirty and dig deeeeeep to find the best deals ! If you weren't aware, the market culture is huge in most African countries, which explains why few shops in malls make profits from locals (I believe most of their profits come from expats and the rich part of the population). I meeeeean, why would I pay three times the price of something I can have at a bargain?
I'm from Ivory Coast and Wednesday was honestly an exciting day for my friends and I! We didn't have class in the afternoon and Wednesday was the day when vendors would bring new items fresh out of the boat to the market! So we were wandering around the market bargaining for the best deaaaals and trust me, rare are the times I have been disappointed.
Shopping in a mall is nice but shopping at an open air market is different. The funny bargaining experience, vendors shouting hilarious things from all parts to attract you, the smell of delicious street food (our parents forbade us to eat...) etc : All this is UNIQUE to open-air markets! Being in Kenya, it was obvious that I had to go back to my old ways :) So this article (cliiiiick) ranks the best Nairobi markets (according to me) to shop at for general and kenyan crafts. Enjoy :)
